The official guide

Everything you need for a great hang with Zelly: what to feed him, how to brush him, and a frankly unreasonable number of ways to play with him.

(Not to be confused with the Zelly Sitting Guide — this one is specific to stop-in supplemental visits.)

The job

Your Role

Zelly has a primary caretaker while I'm away — food, litter, and survival are covered. You're here for the bonus round: love, attention, and playtime. He's a social guy, and he does best when people actually hang out with him.

  1. Come over. Entry details are in The Apartment section.
  2. Hang out. Watch something, eat something, let him supervise you.
  3. Play with the cat. Treats, brushing, and at least one round from the play ideas.

Food

Second Lunch

We want him eating as much as possible, so don't worry about when he was last fed.

  1. Find his food bowl, scrape any leftovers into the trash, and give the bowl a rinse.
  2. Grab a can from the top-right kitchen cabinet and refill the bowl.

Housekeeping

The Household Rounds

Three quick jobs that keep the gentleman's quarters up to standard. Five minutes, tops.

💧 Water — two bowls

One in the kitchen, one in the primary bathroom. Rinse them out, wipe them down, refill with fresh water.

🐈 Litter box

Scoop it out and top it up with some extra litter.

🌀 Fur patrol

Grab the vacuum stationed by the litter box and do a quick lap of the usual collection points: the edges of the rooms and the living-room rug.

Grooming

Brushing (the churro method)

Zelly has an unnecessary amount of fluff, and it mats if nobody helps him with it. Luckily there's a technique, and it works every time:

  1. Squeeze a churro treat onto a plate and set it in front of him.
  2. Brush while he licks. Work the comb gently, as close to the skin as you can without poking it. Slow strokes.
  3. Cover the key zones below. You will have to be patient with him to build trust.
Gentle does it: close to the skin, never into it. If he tenses up, pause and let the churro do its diplomacy.

Course of study

Purrdue University

Welcome to the course catalog of a purrstigious institution. Every technique here has been field-tested on one very specific cat. Pick whatever suits the mood — every semester the techniques get more advanced.

Freshman year easy wins

101The Spinny Ball

Track on a soft surface, blanket draped over it, one flick. The slight angle provides infinite play.

102Tricks

High five, spin, and go where you point. Treats are in the top-right kitchen cabinet — trick first, then treat.

Sophomore year a little patience

201Flying Feathers

Big arcs over the bed. He leaves the ground — all four paws. Let him catch it sometimes; everybody needs a win.

202The Slow Reveal

Ease a wand around a corner a centimetre at a time. The slower it moves, the harder he hits it.

203The Burrowing Animal

Lift the edge of a blanket and slide a toy underneath. Something is moving under there, and he cannot allow that. Give him a beat — he goes in after it.

Junior year get creative

301Something New

Put any safe object somewhere it has no business being — a lizard on the wall, a ribbon on the TV stand, a wand hooked over a door. A toy he has solved is furniture; the same toy in a new place is a new game.

Senior year the finals

401The Hammock

Pull a sheet taut across a gap — getting it tight enough is the hard part. If it looks sturdy he'll board it himself; then attack your fingers from underneath.

402Hide & Seek

Catch his eye, run off, hide. When he finds you he pounces and looks smug about it.

Independent study no supervision required

ISBoxes, Bags & Forts

Leave a box, a bag or a pillow fort on the floor and walk away. Construction attracts him; patience closes the deal.

Patio Time

He loves getting time out on the patio. If you want to hang out there with him, he would love it. During the day he loves sunbathing, but at night he gets a bit of a craving for adventure — so be careful.
